Job Opportunity – Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)

Within the framework of the laboratory, under the direct supervision of a Lab Director. Performs laboratory testing and related documentation functions accurately and in a timely manner to provide information for patient care. Performs routine and specialized testing as well as activities associated with actual testing such as quality control, quality assurance and instrument maintenance.



Essential Functions


  • Responsible for daily laboratory testing in areas of hematology, chemistry, and point of care testing.
  • Maintains quality results by running standards and controls, verifying equipment function through routine equipment maintenance and advanced trouble shooting; calibrating equipment utilizing approved testing procedures; monitoring quality control measures and protocols.
  • Serves as technical resource by participating in staff training; answering questions of other professionals; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks.
  • Defines and maintains the standards of laboratory testing within the institution according to established CLIA guidelines.
  • Routinely assesses the quality of testing rendered.
  • Obtains blood specimens using venipuncture and capillary collections from patients of all ages in the hospital.
  • Responsible for verifying quality control data tested and calibration of instruments when applicable.
  • Participate in analysis of Proficiency Test samples and assist in training of lab staff on proficiency testing process
  • Responsible for collaborating with other departments and agencies regarding resources, testing requirements and services for improved patient care.
  • Participates in appropriate meetings and committees.
  • Must assist and train other lab testing personnel in processing specimens, documents management and reporting results.
  • Responsible for answering phone calls, restocking and ordering of lab supplies, routine cleaning of work areas, and maintenance of equipment.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Must be licensed by state to perform lab testing if applicable
  • Associates degree
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent
  • Current BLS, required
  • Experience with IV start, phlebotomy, preferred Certification as an EMT and/or ER experience, preferred
  • 3 -5 years of lab testing experience required
